For Runner Susan

The legendary Runner Susan commented on a picture of Jinx the other day leaving this question:

“Where do animals like that come from? And where did its hair go? Does it drink blood?”So I thought I’d answer. The Sphynx cat originated in Toronto, Canada in 1966 when a hairless kitten, named Prune was born. Since then they have been breed out and back to establish a breeding line. They are allowed to have some hair – Jinx is a really bald dude though, only having a little on his face and tips of his ears. They can have some on their tail and feet.

Even though he hasn’t got hair covering his body he has a fuzz that and he feels like a warm peach. He needs a bath once a week which is ok as he loves the water the only other grooming he needs is having his nails clipped and ears cleaned (for some reason they get full of gunk).

Jinx has a very high metabolic rate and is always warm, so he doesn’t really need to be covered up or wear coats – but if it’s cold he will jump up your jumper or under the covers in bed.I don’t think he drinks blood, but saying that he isn’t fully grown yet. What he does eat is everything! I have never known a cat eat as much as he does (he also drinks about a liter of water a day). Apart from cat food he loves pizza, pumpkin, pasta, rice, chips, ice cream and anything he can find including sellotape, stamps and other choking hazards :-/

I must admit I had my reservations about him when we first met but he has proved to be the best pet we’ve ever had and my daughter adores him. The only downside is he won’t leave you alone, if you try to ignore him he will run up your leg and sit on your shoulder as you walk past.

All in all If you where ever thinking about an exotic cat breed I can’t recommend Sphynx cats enough – They Rock!
